WAGM-TV of Presque Isle reported that the city of Presque Isle, Sargent Corporation and CES Inc. Engineers were awarded the 2015 Governor’s Award for environmental excellence. The TV news report said the Presque Isle Landfill project “was innovative and was successful due to collaboration between the design firm and the construction company to ensure smooth execution.”
The report quoted CES President Denis St. Peter, who said everyone—the contractor, the city, the DEP engineer, and the project manager “all worked as a team with the stated goal of saving money.” The projected cost was $3.4 million and the actual cost was $2.5 million, saving the taxpayers $900,000.
Avery Day, Acting Commissioner of the Maine DEP, said the project was completed both ahead of schedule and under budget. Even more important, he said the design-build process that was used for the project can be used in municipal landfills throughout the state.
Each year the Governor and the DEP give awards to companies that tackle environmental problems in innovative ways. The presentation took place last September at Presque Isle City Hall.
