Description / Significance

Sargent Corporation’s role in the project included the onshore excavation for bridge abutment placement as well as placement of heavy riprap around the new bridge abutments and piers in the Penobscot River to protect them from river ice.  The site work associated with the bridge consisted of building two approaches to the new bridge.  Each new roadway approach on either side of the new bridge was a re-alignment of a three-way intersection.  Careful coordination of traffic control measures was necessary to ensure public safety throughout the duration of the work.

Work included:

  • Placement of 5,000 cubic yards of boulders ranging in size from 24″ to 36″ as scour protection for bridge abutments and piers.
  • Installation of drainage structures and piping on both sides of river.
  • Re-alignment of roadway approach intersections on either side of the new bridge.  Each intersection was a three-way intersection which posed many traffic control challenges throughout the project.
