Description / Significance

Sargent Corporation teamed up with T.Y. Lin International of Falmouth and Lane Corporation of Presque Isle and Bangor to design and build a 2.75-mile section of the Caribou Connector, a bypass to improve traffic around Caribou, Maine.

The project included an arterial highway system consisting of two (2) twelve-foot travel lanes with eight-foot shoulders, a flyover of Route 89, a diamond interchange, drainage and roadside features.  The project also included four bridge structures.

Sargent Corporation’s Design-Build Team proposed an innovative plan to exceed the RFP requirements and offer improved features, including reduced environmental impact and maintenance cost, fast-track schedule, improved aesthetics, and increased visibility for the local business district.

The project involved:

  • 17 acres of clearing
  • 147,000 cubic yards of common excavation
  • 80,000 cubic yards of rock excavation
  • 53,000 cubic yards of drilling and blasting
  • 79,000 cubic yards of gravel were hauled to site and placed in constructing the base for the roadway
