Position Summary:  The Field Mechanic is responsible for troubleshooting and repairing heavy trucks and equipment on projects located in Southern Maine and throughout New Hampshire.

Qualifications Required:  Previous experience with truck and equipment repair is required.  Education or certification in truck and/or heavy equipment may be substituted for experience.  Must have the ability to troubleshoot and identify issues, be self-motivated and able to work independently, have the ability to effectively communicate with field personnel, and be willing to travel to projects on a weekly basis.  Welding experience and a CDL license are a plus.

Position Summary:  Working in a fast-paced, team oriented environment managing a company-wide quality assurance plan, a laboratory quality system plan and training program to ensure hot mix asphalt (HMA) and component materials comply with various owners’ and DOT specifications and requirements.  Conduct research and review the research of others to improve the quality of the product and maximize profitability.  Position is based at the Asphalt Plant in Hermon, ME reporting directly to Sargent Materials General Manager.

Qualifications Required:  Bachelor’s degree from a four year college or university, or four or more years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.  NETTCP HMA Plant and/or Paving Technician and NETTCP Quality Assurance Technician certifications.  Knowledge and understanding of basic operating procedures and mechanics of an asphalt plant; experience in creating superpave mix designs; experience in operating QC laboratory equipment required to meet testing standards; and the ability to detect and respond quickly to malfunctions and safety hazards.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS, SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Thorough knowledge of all aspects of earth construction (technology, equipment, methods), engineering methods and drawings, cost control and scheduling.
  • Excellent communication, organizational and supervisory skills essential.
  • Knowledge of and ability to follow and enforce all applicable safety standards at all times.
  • Ability to simultaneously supervise a variety of items and people, which may change often.
  • Ability to maintain neat, professional appearance on job sites at all times.

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, EXPERIENCE:

  • Four-year engineering or construction management degree or equivalent combinations of technical training and/or related experience.
  • Extensive experience in construction supervision.
  • Valid driver’s license.

TYPICAL DUTIES:

  • MUST BE WILLING TO TRAVEL UP TO A WEEK AT A TIME IN THE MID-ATLANTIC
  • Supervise construction efforts to ensure project is constructed in accordance with design, budget and schedule. Includes interfacing with client, client representatives, inspectors, governmental oversight bodies, other contractors, suppliers and field staff.
  • Effectively plan, direct and supervise workers engaged in construction activities.
  • Follow all OSHA and company safety policies.
  • Create and reinforce a culture of safety that creates no questions as to whether it is a company policy.
  • Provide safety feedback and coaching to foreman and crews.
  • Ensure all subcontractors are following company safety policies.
  • Conduct weekly safety training for employees.
  • Know the details of the job and have a deep thorough understanding of project resource needs one week to three month in advance.
  • Understand and implement all construction aspects of the contract and the project procedures.
  • Interpret and be able to explain plans for construction projects to foreman and crews.
  • Manage contract submittal files and confirm materials ordered, delivered and installed conform to approved submittals.
  • Maintain contract documents and prepare and/or maintain record drawings.
  • Eliminate/minimize resource and cost surprises.
  • Ensure that crews have the best available resources at the correct time.
  • Create and reinforce a culture of continuous production improvement in the field by identifying and implementing changes that improve productivity.
  • Ensure the project team knows the production expectations and actual production on a regular basis. Alert the project team of any other relevant or important information, including any potential issues with customers.
  • Manage subcontractors and provide feedback on subcontractor performance.
  • Coordinate assigned work with work of different crews, company departments and other contractors.
  • Create and reinforce a culture of quality work. Conduct and document quality control inspections.
  • Investigate incidents and accidents, and document the findings.
  • Conduct evaluations of all employees supervised for more than 200 hours in a season.
  • Maintain project quantities and requisition quantity records.
  • Record actual hours worked by submitting time cards and other required documentation.
  • When possible, resolve all personnel issues and problems at the field level. If necessary, contact Human Resources to discuss items of concern.
  • Establish and maintain good relationships with employees, subcontractors, clients, owners, and engineers.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Stand or walk for long durations.
  • Manual dexterity and the ability to use hands and arms to grasp, reach for, handle and assemble or manipulate objects.
  • See (naturally or with correction).
  • Hear (naturally or with correction) on sites where the hearing of backup alarms or other sounds may be required.
  • Climb up and down ladders and other objects.
  • Meet the physical requirements necessary to safely and effectively perform assigned duties for up to 10-12 hours a day in hot and cold weather conditions.

Typical Duties:

  • Find malfunctions in equipment with the use of testing instruments, dials, and gauges.
  • Use hydraulic jacks or hoists in order to raise heavy equipment or trucks.
  • Fix and or move different safety devices.
  • Change oil, check batteries, lubricate equipment and machinery.
  • Read operating manuals, blueprints and technical drawings
  • Dismantle and reassemble equipment.
  • Test machines and equipment to ensure operating correctly.
  • Perform various other duties as assigned by supervisor.

General Requirements, Skills and Knowledge:

  • Ability to read and understand signs and written warnings and directions.

  • Ability to apply shop mathematics to solve problems.
