Regional Manager, Mid-Atlantic

Q: What is your job title and what are your typical responsibilities?
A: I joined Sargent in April of 2007, and I’m currently the regional manager for the Mid-Atlantic area. I started out as a junior foreman and I eventually became a foreman. After that, I became a project manager in 2010 and stayed in that role until 2015, when I moved into the regional manager position.

Basically, I oversee all of Sargent’s operations in this region, which includes Virginia, North Carolina, and sometimes Maryland.

Q: What are the most common challenges you face in your role?
A: Every day is different, which can be a challenge in itself. I enjoy the unpredictability of what’s going to happen each day. I also have a strong focus on keeping a steady workload for our people. Coordination of projects, making sure every project is adequately staffed, and shifting people from one job to another — a big part of my role is making those transitions as smooth as possible for everyone.

Q: What did your education and work history look like before joining Sargent?
A: I came to work with Sargent a year after finishing college at the University of Southern Maine. All through college and for the first year after graduation, I worked in residential construction building houses and garages, and also doing remodels.

Q: What do you enjoy about your job?
A: I enjoy the people I work with and the variety of projects we work on each day. I also enjoy seeing our people performing at their highest levels and accomplishing things they didn’t know they could. It’s always rewarding for me to see the elements of labor and equipment aligning and functioning smoothly together.

Q: Why is Sargent such a great company to work for?
A: Sargent’s employee ownership is a huge benefit for everyone who works here. Being employee-owned makes the company feel like a small family business, as we all share in the successes of the company. I also think employee ownership leads us to take pride in our work and constantly hone our craft to make improvements in what we do each day.

Q: Is there any specific part of your job that you’re especially proud of?
A: I take a lot of pride in hiring people who come to us with a little experience and a strong work ethic. It is rewarding to see them eat up all the information our people give them and see how they advance and take on new responsibilities in a short amount of time.

Q: How do you like to spend your free time when you’re not at work?
A: My wife and I like to spend as much time outdoors as possible, usually with our yellow Lab. We go running, hiking, camping, fishing — anything that gets us outside and enjoying nature.
